Sun Life Plaza & Deerfoot Atria

HMA Consulting designed the retrofit of the building automation, fire alarm and integrated security systems for the three towers that make up the 1,100,000 square-foot Sun Life Plaza in downtown Calgary. This was part of a major building systems upgrade for the property that also included extensive refurbishing and upgrading of the mechanical systems.

A security risk analysis identified several areas where additional countermeasures were required and identified potential problems with the existing system. The integrated security systems encompass CCTV, access control and monitoring systems, video badging system and voice communication systems.

The building management system was upgraded to provide DDC control to the mechanical systems and to provide additional operating data and energy management optimization routines.

The fire alarm system was replaced totally and the original three systems were replaced with a single system. The retrofit project was completed over an 18-month period without disturbing the tenants and included both base building and tenant fit-out systems.

The building management system and the security systems at two suburban properties were also included in the retrofit project and these buildings are also monitored and controlled from the Sun Life Plaza control room located in downtown Calgary.
